Collection: Charles Pollock
Charles Pollock (American 1930–2013) Born in Philadelphia, Charles Pollock began his design studies at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, where he quickly distinguished himself as a star student, earning numerous awards in art and design. He later received a scholarship to attend the Pratt Institute in New York, graduating in 1953. Following two years of service in the United States Army—where he worked as art editor for Infantry Magazine—Pollock joined the office of George Nelson at Herman Miller, gaining early exposure to the forefront of modern American design. In 1958, Pollock left Nelson’s studio and began a productive collaboration with Florence Knoll that lasted until her retirement in 1965. Encouraged by Knoll Planning Unit member Vincent Cafiero, Pollock developed prototypes that led to his Model 657 Lounge, a refined combination of leather, steel, and plastic. His breakthrough came with the 1250 Series Executive Chairs, defined by a sleek extruded aluminum rim—a design that became an instant classic and remains in production today as one of Knoll’s most enduring and iconic contributions to the modern workplace. After decades away from the spotlight, Pollock reemerged in 2012 at the age of 82, introducing new designs for Bernhardt Design. His CP Lounge Collection exemplified the same principles that defined his career: continuous flowing lines, a harmony of aesthetics and function, and a timeless modern sensibility.
