Ralph Lauren (born Ralph Lifshitz, October 14, 1939, in the Bronx, New York) is an American fashion designer and businessman, best known as the founder of Ralph Lauren Corporation. He began his career selling ties, launching his own necktie line, Polo, in 1967. By 1968 he had expanded into menswear, and the company grew into one of the most recognizable fashion and lifestyle brands in the world, encompassing apparel, accessories, fragrance, and home furnishings under labels including Polo Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lauren Purple Label, and Ralph Lauren Home. Lauren built his brand around a distinctive vision of classic American style layered with English aristocratic and equestrian influences — a look often described as "preppy" luxury. He took the company public in 1997 and stepped down as CEO in 2015, remaining Executive Chairman and Chief Creative Officer. He has received numerous honors over his career, including a lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America and induction into the Fashion Hall of Fame.
